Choosing a storage unit gets easier once you stop thinking only in terms of square footage and start thinking about what actually needs to fit through the door. A few boxes and seasonal items call for a very different space than a bedroom set, major appliances, or the contents of several rooms.
At East Warehouse Self Storage, we have two Layton properties with different size selections. Our Hill Field Road location includes units from 5x7 through 10x25, while our Fairfield Road property includes options up to 20x20. If you're comparing storage options in Layton, knowing roughly how much you're storing before looking at availability will narrow the choices quickly.
Small Storage Units
5x7 Storage Unit
A 5x7 is one of our smallest options and is available at the Hill Field Road property. We place 5x7 units in the small category, suited to the furnishings of a small to midsize bedroom. That can include a full or queen bed, dresser, television, and some boxes, depending on the dimensions and how everything is arranged.
This size makes sense when you're clearing one room rather than moving an entire household. It also gives you an alternative to paying for a much larger floor area when the belongings you're storing are relatively compact.
5x9 and 5x10 Storage Units
A 5x9 adds a little more floor space while keeping a narrow footprint. East Warehouse offers the 5x9 at Hill Field Road, along with a 5x10. The 5x10 is also available at Fairfield Road, so renters who know they need approximately this amount of space have an option at either property.
We group 5x7 and 5x10 units with seasonal gear, small furnishings, and office supplies. A 5x10 is a useful place to start when a closet-sized space won't be enough, but the contents still come primarily from one room rather than a full home.
Medium Storage Units?
7x8, 7x10, and 8x10 Storage Units
Hill Field Road has several sizes between the standard 5x10 and 10x10. These include 7x8, 7x10, and 8x10 units, which give renters more choices instead of forcing a jump directly to 100 square feet. We describe these medium units as suitable for the furnishings of a large bedroom or small family room, or the contents of two bedrooms.
The 7x10 option at Hill Field Road is also listed as an indoor, insulated unit. It is the specific insulated size confirmed in our FAQ, so renters looking for that feature should distinguish it from the outdoor ground-floor units offered in other dimensions.
10x10 Storage Unit
At 100 square feet, the 10x10 is one of the easiest sizes to visualize. We offer it at both Layton properties, and our main size guide compares its floor area to one side of a garage. It's intended for household furniture, travel gear, office furniture, and roughly the contents of a one-bedroom home.
A 10x10 also gives you more flexibility in arranging furniture and boxes than the narrower units. If you'll return for seasonal gear or business supplies, plan the layout before loading and leave frequently needed belongings closer to the entrance.
Large Storage Units
10x15 Storage Unit
The 10x15 is available at our Hill Field Road location. We place it in the large category alongside the 10x10 and 8x20 and consider it appropriate for an entire family room or the contents of two to three full bedrooms.
The extra depth matters when you're storing several substantial pieces of furniture at once. Measure sofas, tables, bed frames, and other large items before choosing the unit, especially if some pieces cannot be disassembled.
8x20 and 10x17 Storage Units
Not every useful size follows the familiar 5-foot increments. At Hill Field Road, we offer an 8x20 as well as a 10x17. The 8x20 is included in our large category, while the 10x17 moves into our extra-large group.
These intermediate dimensions are worth checking before automatically choosing a 10x20. If your inventory fits one of them, you may be able to match the space more closely to what you're actually storing.
Extra-Large Storage Units
10x20 Storage Unit
We offer 10x20 units at both Layton locations. We compare larger 10x20 and 20x20 spaces to an entire garage and list large furniture, major appliances, and sizable outdoor equipment among the items they can accommodate. Our FAQ also confirms that a 10x20 can store vehicles such as cars, trucks, and motorcycles.
Both facility pages currently list 10x20 units as enclosed vehicle storage. Vehicle fit still depends on the vehicle's dimensions, so measure before renting rather than relying on the unit's square footage alone.
10x25 Storage Unit
A 10x25 gives you 50 more square feet than a 10x20 while keeping the same width. It's offered at both Hill Field Road and Fairfield Road, where the current rental pages list it as enclosed vehicle storage.
This size belongs to our extra-large category. On our published guide, we describe that category as intended for substantial household loads that include large pieces such as a couch, bed, refrigerator, and entertainment center. The added depth also gives you more room to organize belongings instead of concentrating everything into one dense stack.
15x18 Storage Unit
The 15x18 is available at Fairfield Road. At 270 square feet, it provides more floor area than a 10x25 and has a wider footprint, which can be useful when the belongings you're storing are bulky rather than easily stacked.
For a unit this large, create a rough inventory before moving day. Knowing where furniture, appliances, and labeled boxes will go helps prevent usable space from disappearing behind an inefficient first row of belongings.
20x20 Storage Unit
The 20x20 is the largest size currently at our Fairfield Road property. Our size guidance places it with the largest household options and states that the 20x20 can fit a small car. The Fairfield rental page also lists this unit for fully enclosed vehicle storage.
A 20x20 provides 400 square feet of floor space, so layout matters. If you're storing household contents along with a vehicle or other large equipment, measure everything first and account for the space required to enter, exit, and reach anything you'll need during the rental.
Square Footage Isn't the Only Measurement That Matters
Two units with similar floor areas don't necessarily work equally well for the same belongings. Shape matters. A long 8x20 space and a wider unit may have comparable capacity on paper but create very different layouts for sofas, appliances, shelving, or other bulky items.
Height matters too. Our Layton facility pages list exceptionally high ceilings of 10 to 12 feet. That doesn't mean every item should simply be stacked as high as possible. Heavy boxes belong low, and anything stacked above them needs to be stable. Our storage tips also recommend using vertical space deliberately rather than spreading everything across the floor.
Furniture needs some planning of its own, particularly for longer rentals. If tables, dressers, bed frames, or other wood pieces are part of your inventory, our guide to storing wood furniture without climate control is a useful companion before you start packing.
Choosing Between Our Two Layton Locations
The biggest difference for size selection is the inventory available at each property. Hill Field Road has the broader selection of smaller and intermediate dimensions, beginning with 5x7 and including several choices between 5x10 and 10x20. Fairfield Road begins at 5x10 and includes the larger 15x18 and 20x20 spaces. Both locations currently offer 5x10, 10x10, 10x20, and 10x25 units.
Location can help break a tie. Our Hill Field Road property sits at 85 W 2675 N, just outside the South Gate of Hill Air Force Base. The Air Force identifies the South Gate as one of the base's primary entrances, so this is a particularly relevant local reference for military households sorting belongings during a move or housing transition.
Both properties have ground-floor options, and access hours are from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day. That matters when choosing a unit you'll visit regularly, since the right size should give you enough room to retrieve belongings without unloading the space each time.
Choose Space for What You're Actually Storing
The best size isn't automatically the smallest unit that can physically hold everything. If you're storing belongings for months and expect to retrieve items along the way, a little working room may be useful. If everything will stay packed until one final move-out, a tighter layout may make more sense.
Start with an inventory, measure the largest pieces, and compare those needs with the sizes available at each Layton property.
